feedie
is an exploratory journalism tool which composites surprising intersections of food’s past, present, and future into a digestible framework. The user navigates and explores feedie’s exciting and hidden food narratives through a mobile app.
Every food has a story— it’s genetic makeup is people, places, politics, technology, and climate. feedie is an editorialized resource of up-to-date anecdotal stories of individual food items available for consumption. Users swipe through fascinating food narratives spanning from centuries ago to the future, making connections in unexpected places. feedie users peer into food history, present, and future in a highly curious and interactive environment.
feedie was prototyped and presented in May 2015 at ITP NYU's Thesis Week. This project was researched, ideated, prototyped, and developed entirely by me, with great help from my thesis advisor, Britta Riley, and support of my ITP colleagues.

Concept Development
The Problem
Why is it so difficult to get accurate and real-time data about where our food comes from? Are there ways to understand the dynamic nature of food? Can technology help in connecting people to primary sources of information (farmers, local economists, anthropologists, etc.)?

Concept map of the quinoa food system, revealing the problematic nature of false data.
Research
What other products exist that are similar (do they address seasonality and other dynamic changes to harvesting and accessibility)?

User Targets
The target user is two fold-- those who have a stake on the food production side, and those who recognize their explicit contribution to the food consumption side. The target user is somewhere in between someone who says they’re interested in living a sustainable lifestyle and someone who eats locally or seasonally. They can be a typical consumer looking to buy produce, or a store manager who is responsible for buying the products from a producer. Both of these individuals have a variety of choices but are interested in the foods with better ranking, based on the overall condition of the food.
